Which musical artists influenced David Bowie? Who were his favorite songwriters? And in the case of such an artist, unique in his own way from beginning to end, is the term "influences" the right one? In studying David Bowie's work, it has been learned that, although he was the kind of person who picked up a little bit of everything, he drew most of his inspiration from himself. Featuring Little Richard, Anthony Newley, Ken Nordine & The Fred Katz Group, Gerry Mulligan, Ray Koerner & Glover, The Stooges, The Beach Boys, Cream, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Pixies, Air, Scott Walker, Grandaddy, Tom Verlaine, Brian Eno, Kevin Ayers, The Mothers Of Invention, Roxy Music, The Langley Schools Music Project, and The Polyphonic Spree.

Music is like literature: getting through a second novel or second album is often a perilous exercise. Spatsz and Mona Soyoc, propelled into the limelight by their explosive Try Out, headed off to New York to record a follow-up to this fabulous debut. By Pass (1983) follows in the musical and sonic footsteps of its predecessor. The same sticky synth layers, the same flayed vocals capable of voluptuous flights, KaS Product still navigates the murky waters of a nervous, unhealthy cold wave, somewhere between the gall of Suicide and the gothic melodies of Siouxsie. And the melodies are always there, as on the stunning "Tina Town" and "T.M.T," two of the most successful tracks on an album that holds up remarkably well, and also deserves a closer look at its detours, such as "Taking Shape" or "Tape" at the end of the disc.

It took a certain determination (and a fair amount of recklessness) to embark on the path of coldwave music in 1982, in Nancy, eastern France. Spatsz worked the machines while Mona sang and played guitar. KaS Product, an unusual duo, debuted with Try Out, a true slap in the face. Synths sent out waves of varying degrees of unease, while Mona Soyoc's voice lent a suave, at times even jazzy tone to this dark, interloping music. Far from cultivating French melancholy, KaS Product leaned towards the United States and its influences, and its synthetic punk seriously shook neurons on tracks such as "Never Come Back" and "So Young And So Cold." Sexy and uncompromising, Try Out marked the near-perfect debut of this duo from Nancy, who immediately stood out in the small hexagonal post-punk world of the time. And their minimalist production has fortunately aged very well.

In the early '90s, Jérôme Soligny met Mike Garson, the extraordinary pianist who transformed David Bowie's music on Aladdin Sane. Soligny invited him to make an album of piano covers of Bowie's songs, and in 2011 he released The Bowie Variations For Piano. To accompany his book Rainbow+, Soligny launched The Rainbow Variations. The album features nine Bowie covers, including "Space Oddity" and "Wild Is The Wind," and one original. Mike Garson displays the full extent of his talent one last time on this project, which brings their collaboration to a close. Available on vinyl for the first time.
