Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. "At the end of the '90s, a movement began in West London that birthed a fresh direction in dance music. Though this movement never got mainstream press coverage, never had a crossover chart single, and never really transcended its community roots, there was a unique alchemy at work -- a fertile moment of creativity, where a group of friends began to experiment with new cadences, rhythms, and distilled influences, crafting a new direction in the attics and bedrooms of their neighboring postcodes. Their music was a head-on collision between the sounds they had been raised on; the reggae sound system culture of Notting Hill Carnival, the sophistication and sheen of electro-funk, jazz fusion, soulful house, and disco, the Afro-beat sounds of Tony Allen and Fela Kuti, and the raw minimalism of early hip-hop. Though 'Broken Beat' was never a tagline that the producers anticipated, and one that they often publicly resisted, those two words would gradually come to represent the scattered rhythms, rolling basslines, and soaring changes that were inherent to this exciting new sound. The production was grounded in MPCs and SP1200s, the hand-me-down samplers of the hip-hop and jungle golden eras, and the drums that tumbled out of these machines at the hands of these creators had a jagged, stuttering feel, almost as though the groove was close to collapse." --Mr Beatnick May 2020
"As a music lover I was always a fan of the broken beat records that came out of west London in the late '90s/early 2000s . . . there's songs on here from Germany (Jazzanova and Lars Bartkuln) Japan (Jazztronik and Hajime Yoshizawa) to represent that. When putting this album together it is hard not to notice the presence of Kaidi Tatham on many of the songs, he was such an instrumental force in the evolution of the sound. Breaking The Beats isn't a best of broken beat album and due to some licensing issues we were unable to include every song I would have liked but I think it does give the listener a good taste of the sound." --Dave Lee
Double-LP version features 4hero, Bugz In The Attic, NSM, Domu, Face, Jazztronik, Kaidi Tatham, Vikter Duplaix, Agent K, Fourth Kind, Taylor McFerrin, Vincent Parker, Nova Fronteira, AtJazz, Blakai, and Bembe Segue. Double-LP version comes in gatefold sleeve.

Z Records continues its commitment to unearthing the obscure and long forgotten tracks from the last 40 years through the ever-popular Under The Influence series. Following on from Red Greg, Paul Phillips, James Glass, Nick The Record, Sean P, Faze Action, and Winston. It's now the turn of one of the Italy's most impressive collectors; Woody Bianchi. The story behind Z Records' Under The Influence series is this: being a seasoned record collector Z label boss Dave Lee/Joey Negro has made the acquaintance of many of the worlds other vinyl junkies. People that may be unknown to the general public but are hardcore enthusiasts who have built some of the best collections of soul, funk, and disco on the planet. The idea of UTI isn't solely about big name DJs compiling albums but to give a musical platform to those who have the knowledge to put together a track listing of killer tunes. Woody Bianchi is a prolific DJ, producer, remixer, and record collector. His international collaborations with Bob Sinclar, Todd Terry, Arthur Baker, Full Intention, Eric Kupper, Jocelyn Brown, Marshall Jefferson, and many others have created a remarkable profile for him. He has released over 300 productions worldwide and has toured side by side with many of the scenes greatest names. Here you have the pleasure of delving into his vast collection and plucking some of the rarest records out, with many of the tracks costing hundreds if you were actually able to find the originals. Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Welcome to the second instalment of Colin Curtis's Jazz Dance Fusion compilation series for Z Records. Curtis looks back into the story and history of the UK jazz dance and jazz music scene; a movement that started, according to Curtis, back in the '70s. The sounds of funk and soul mixed with jazz, influences from Brazil, Africa, Europe, and all over the globe, textures of instrumental sounds and voices fuse to create the much-loved "jazz fusion" sound. Here we are in 2020 when interest in all forms of jazz is growing fast as DJ pioneers such as Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Perry Louis, Snowboy, Nick Hosier, Alan McKinnon, Jim Bernardi, Kev Beadle, Harv Nagi, Shuya Okino, and David Patterson continue to push all aspects of jazz to converted and new audiences. So, to this compilation where Curtis showcases unreleased material and offers tracks up for the first time ever on CD or vinyl. The track listing covers Curtis's addiction to dancefloor jazz, coupled with his passion for vocal and percussive jazz, with his usual trademark Latin touches. Features Paoli Mejias, Leslie Lewis & Gerard Hagen Trio, Curtis Lundy, 8VB, Marita Albán Juárez Quartet, JD Walter, Steven Kroon, Hajime Yoshizawa, Navasha Daya, Raffaela Renzulli Ensemble, Carmen Lundy, Tino Gonzales, Grady Tate, and Jam Session Goes Latino.

The whole Period Works series from Crackazat compiling for the first time onto CD. Featuring two brand new tracks, Crackazat remixes of Sean McCabe and Joey Negro. "The Period Works Series has been a fantastic opportunity to explore of my biggest personal influences in dance music ranging from the rich instrumentation of disco, to the raw energy of early house music. After starting off with Acapellas from the Z Records Library for inspiration in 2016, the series has now culminated into new and original songs influenced by a golden age passed. Thank you to David Lee and Z Records for the opportunity and creative direction, and thank you to everyone who has purchased, listened and danced to the Period Works Series. Best Wishes" --Crackazat

Founded way back in '91, Z Records has since amassed a lauded and plentiful collection of singles, albums, and compilations. Run by Dave Lee, aka Joey Negro, the label has enjoyed success through his unique ability to foster the principles of underground dance music whilst also remaining mindful of commercial appeal. Through various compilations, Lee has consistently delved deep into the heart of a specific genre or era and selecting a lesser-known series of tracks that give a real insight into the spirit and energy that made that point in time special. This time he's been joined by Neil Pierce as co-compiler for this second collection of their favorite moments across a definitive decade for house and garage: the '90s. Vol. 2 includes material from UFO (United Future Organization), and Slam Mode, as well as remixes from Kings Of Tomorrow, Kerri Chandler, Marshall Jefferson, and Smack Productions -- the compilation is packed with sultry vocal lines and the sort of slick, irresistible grooves that defined the era. Sticking with the ethos of his series, Dave and Neil have dug out a lot of music that may have until now "slipped under the radar" meaning a lot of the material on this compilation is being digitized for the very first time. In searching deeper and wider than the average compilation, the package provides a thorough insight into why this was such a fertile period for production and gives a nod to the sort of drum patterns, sampling techniques, and vocal lines that have inspired the likes of Bicep, Brawther, and Huxley, amongst many more. Dedicated to Paul "Trouble" Anderson.
Double-CD version also features: Satoshi Tomiie, Diane Charlemagne, N-Joi, LNR, Sound Source, Fini Dolo, Restless Soul, Abacus, Glenn Turner, Bonnie Byrd, Biddu Orchestra, Screamin' Rachel, Martha Wash, Tee, Elé Ferrer, Alexander Hope, Tommy Musto, Alexis P Suter, Mama's Children, Lee Truesdale, Colonel Abrams, Cassio Ware, Mentalinstrum, Kathy Summers, House of Jazz, Donald O, Joi Cardwell, Philip Damien, Mental Instrum, and Joey Negro.

Joey Negro's 2019 Essentials is a similar proposition to the successful Remixed With Love series (ZEDD 030CD, 038CD, 045CD), albeit slightly more house-y in places. This double CD contains four exclusive new remixes of disco classics from Double Exposure, The O'Jays, Tamiko Jones, and Delia Renee. Along with these are a selection of the best Joey Negro remixes from what has been a great year musically including his reworks of CeCe Peniston, Horse Meat Disco featuring Kathy Sledge, and Sunkids. Joe Negro also originated some new music in 2019 under the aliases of Mistura, Doug Willis, and Lakeshore Commission, which are also included; add to this remixes of Zedd classics from Grant Nelson, Crakazat, and Dr. Packer. Only one of the 19 songs has been available on CD before. Also features: AC Soul Symphony, Delia Renee, Bobby D'Ambrosio, Raquel Rodriguez, D.C. LaRue, Crackazat, Wardell Piper, Foreal People, JKriv, and Z Factor.

Z Records continues its commitment to unearthing the obscure and long forgotten tracks from the last 40 years through the ever-popular Under The Influence series. It's now the turn of one of the scenes most prolific but yet unknown collectors, Winston. Outside of the established record collectors Winston is pretty much unknown but those that know of him will tell you that despite his low profile he has one of the best record collections around. Sean P remembers his first trip to Winston's house in the sleeve notes: "When I visited his house for the first time, I felt like a beginner -- my expectations were far exceeded by the neat rows and piles of 12"s and LPs everywhere; and I had brought along a foolscap notebook which after eight hours or so, expanded my wants list considerably. I thumbed through hundreds of weird and mysterious independent and major label releases. Winston played whatever I was interested in hearing, occasionally spinning random 7" ('Space Funk' by Manzel, for example) and various LP cuts of his choice. I had perused around half of the collection by the time I left, but I'll never forget that kid-in-a-toyshop feeling, along with the realization of Winston's buddha-like status as a master of this arcane pastime . . . Winston is still doing the 'rounds weekly; and since the Hammersmith Black Music Record events of the mid-80s, he's missed few record fairs, if any -- trading with dealers & fellow collectors and parting with cash when necessary. Surprisingly, he has no truck with the internet -- somewhat curious to the rest of us who now can't imagine life without it. And as a man with no online presence, knowledge of Winston's existence is restricted to the real world. Some justification, perhaps, for giving this fervent ambassador of all things boogie an opportunity to share some of his favorites beyond those in the know. So for Volume Seven of the Under The Influence series Winston has included tracks taking in soul, funk, disco, and boogie with many of the tracks costing hundreds if you were able to find the originals." Double-CD version features: Mary Gold, Doug Payne & Polygon, Bollyn Thompson, Betty Padgett, Bilalian Creation, Expose, Lord Of Storm, Jungle Band, RG's All Nite Funk Band, T.T. Sotto, Bramsam, Jonnie Vibes Lambert, Synergy, Donnell Pitman, Al "Man" Muntzie and The Embraceables, Are & Be, Juice, The G.T.'s, Eklips, Ms. Victoria Barnes, The Olympics, Suave, and The Rappers.

Subtitled: A Collection of the UK's Finest Underground Soul Jazz-Funk and Disco. Backstreet Brit Funk, compiled by Dave Lee aka Joey Negro is a double disc album featuring highly-collectable tracks from the late '70s through to the mid-'80s with sleeve notes from soul weekender veteran Mark Webster. This compilation will appeal as much to fans of labels like Soul Jazz as the usual Z Records collectors. Brit Funk tells the story of the underground scene in the UK when punk and disco were giving way to a new blend of jazz, soul and funk, heavily influenced by the American big-hitters of the day but re-worked by the UK pioneers for the British dancefloors. This is a unique selection of high quality music, which will have a shelf-life lasting well beyond the currents trends and fads. All tracks have been Cedared and re-mastered to a very high standard and now sound better than ever before. Joey Negro has also re-edited many of the tracks exclusively for this album, updating them with a fresh new approach. A collection of rare and very sought-after underground British disco, funk and soul tracks avoiding the obvious hits. Many of these tracks never went beyond a very small local release but have since become very collectable. Buying this lot would set you back somewhere in the four figures. When it comes to being at the cutting edge of clubbing culture, the Brits are always right there at the front of the line. Just as revolutionary as the clubber's style was the music they were into -- often provided by American musicians easily twice their British audience's age and what's more, very much from the American jazz establishment. Names such as Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith, Donald Byrd and George Duke had already been around as dedicated jazzers, while groups such as Earth, Wind & Fire and The Crusaders were also borne out of that tradition. Created by British musicians for the UK audience, Brit funk was raw and up-tempo and what it lacked in the smooth finesse of the polished American jazz funk, it made up for with unbridled enthusiasm and energy. Joey Negro has some of the genuinely "unsung" heroic records of the style; hard-to-find but absolutely right THERE in terms of those soul, jazz, funk and disco influences -- with that Brit funk twist. Features China Burton, Joey Negro, Ed Bentley, Style X, Mirage, Savanna, Ritual, MBT, Ranson, McKenzie & Friends, 52nd Street, The Cool Notes, and Nigel Martinez.

Classic disco reworked from original multi-track tapes, Joey Negro's Remixed With Love Volume 3 is the latest edition of what has become the industry-leading disco remix series. No one knows this era of music better than Dave Lee, who under his Joey Negro alias once again turns his impeccable hand to some of the best-loved records ever committed to wax. Lee says, "I can clearly remember in the 1980s having fantasies about being a remixer and dreaming of tweaking my favorite songs and re-releasing them. I really never thought it would happen. The days when I receive the parts for some of these classic recordings are literally a dream come true." Remixed With Love Volume 3 has been a real labor of love, and a release several years in the making. With original parts for some of these classics hard to find, and with major labels rightly protective of songs created by legendary artists, it is a testament to both the perseverance of Lee and the esteem in which he is held as a remixer that the project was ever completed. Lee has put his own inimitable spin on more than a dozen seminal records, with The Fatback Band, Patti LaBelle, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Odyssey and many more vying for attention across a stunning three-part gatefold double vinyl/double CD release. As one would expect from an artist of Lee's caliber, he's taken the task extremely seriously. There are few producers with either the confident or ability to take on records of this heritage, but Lee has once again proved that when it comes to sensitive re-workings of disco staples, he's in a league of his own. All the remixes here are new and exclusive to the compilation, making Remixed With Love Volume 3 an essential purchase for any disco devotee. Also features: Ashford & Simpson, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Earth, Wind & Fire, Eddie Kendricks, Brenda Russell, L.T.D., Michael Wycoff, Gwen McCrae, Samuel Jonathan Johnson, Mass Production, Lonnie Liston Smith, Mtume, Glenn Jones, Slave, Venus Dodson, Booker T., Patrice Rushen, and Deniece Williams.

Part two of three double-LP versions; gatefold sleeve.

Part One of two. Double LP. Gatefold sleeve. Z Records continues its commitment to unearthing the obscure and long-forgotten tracks from the last 40 years with the much-anticipated follow up to Backstreet Brit Funk. Volume 2 has been eight years in the making and continues to showcase the best of the genre from the late '70s to early '80s, compiled once again by Joey Negro. Brit funk is perhaps one of the UK's most under-appreciated genres. Emerging in the late '70s and taking influences from jazz, funk, reggae, and pop, by the early '80s it had spread all over the UK. Brit funk was essentially the UK's answer to underground disco. Like disco, the Brit funk scene was significant in reducing racial boundaries in the clubs and raising the profile of black and white musicians who worked together. Back in 2010 Joey Negro complied the first volume of Backstreet Brit Funk. The fact that it's taken eight years for Volume 2 to see the light of day is a testament to the both the obscurity of the records included, and the logistical challenges involved in digitizing what started life as vinyl-only releases. It's incredible how rare some of the records included on Vol.2 are and how diverse the sounds become. Though well over half the album's material comes from the likes of Touchdown, Rick Clarke, and Savanna, which have the classic slapped bass-driven Brit funk sound that many will be familiar with, it also features acts like Mercy Mercy, AD 2000, and Veira Krew who were releasing a little later in the scene's evolution, employing drum machines and resulting in more synth-based records. Paul Bailey Sound and Eastbound Expressway were earlier acts, experimenting with the disco sound, whilst I.C.Q. is a classic early '80s UK jazz dance cut that's never been released beyond the original white/green label.
Part One (ZEDD 044LP) of two double LPs features Rick Clarke, Savanna, Proton, The Oceans, Kandidate, The Paul Bailey Sound, Janet Kay, Veira Krew, Rare Moods, and Powerline.

Z Records continues its commitment to unearthing the obscure and long forgotten tracks from the last 40 years through the ever-popular Under The Influence series. Following on from Red Greg, Paul Phillips, James Glass, Nick The Record, and Sean P it's now the turn of one of the scenes most respected live disco acts and renowned DJs, Faze Action. Robin and Simon Lee, aka Faze Action, were championing disco and all its Afro off-shoots back in the mid '90s when it certainly wasn't the latest trend to do so. "By the mid-90s we were heavily into disco. Fueled by radio shows from the likes of Norman Jay as well as conversations with customers in the record store where I worked, who were all super obsessed, we would talk disco for hours," remembers Simon Lee. It was however their Turn The Point (1996) and In The Trees (1996) releases on nuphonic records that shaped the Faze Action sound and played a large part in coining the term nu-disco. Fast forward 20+ years and the brothers are still pushing the modern disco sound with their live sets and studio productions as Faze Action. Alongside their studio work they've always been serious record collectors so their selections for this latest Under The Influence album are reflective of their extensive collecting and digging history. As Simon confirms, "searching for and buying old records helps to keep our musical thirst alive and is a constant source of inspiration for both our DJ sets and our original productions." Here they've included tracks taking in Afro, Italo, soul, funk, disco, with many of the tracks costing hundreds if you were able to find the originals. Included in the booklet are extensive track notes from Faze Action highlighting what they know about these records and, where they are super-rare and obscure, what they don't. As always with Z Records compilations, a lot of time and effort has been spent on creating these masters from the original vinyl, cleaning them up, removing all the clicks and pops resulting in the cleanest sounding copy possible. Features Carol Dionne, Space, Mikki, Starz, Leston Paul, Michele Claire, Galaxy, Midway, Songhoi Band, Stylus, Oscar Perry, and Spats. Double-CD version features Bebe Manga , Saraba, Courtial, Errol Knowles, Delight, Phenix Horns Esquire, Disco Circus, Pilgrim Fathers Orchestra, Don Lurio, Space, and Tony Antoniou.

2017 saw Colin Curtis celebrate his 50th anniversary as a DJ. He is one of the scene's leading figures as a result of his legendary '70s partnership with Ian Levine at the Blackpool Mecca.
This is Colin's own story: "By 1979, the development of Jazz rooms at major soul/funk all-dayers was providing a much-needed outlet for the more discerning collectors and the fanatical jazz dancers. . . . I had started to experiment with the jazzier side of dance tracks at Blackpool Mecca in around 1976 with artists like Patrice Rushen, Bill Summers, Azar Lawrence, Charles Earland, Johnny Hammond, Donald Byrd, etc., all artists I had discovered using the inner sleeves of Blue Note, Fantasy, Prestige, and Mercury labels. . . . [As a collector] I was thriving on searching out more of this amalgamation of jazz styles adding fusion, percussion, vocals and tempo to this burgeoning genre. As the jazz room identity increased within this environment for me Birmingham, Nottingham, Leeds, Manchester all became prominent in their enthusiasm for jazz dance. . . . Baz Fe Jazz, Chris Reed, Shaun Williams, Simon Mansell, Jonathan Woodliffe, Paul Murphy, Eric & Floyd, Hewan Clarke, and many others were willing to push the barriers. This jazz dance explosion spread across the country with DJs like Dr Bob Jones, Colin Parnell, and Boo Sylvester adding to the London connection via clubs like The Electric Ballroom and The Horseshoe. . . . [This] compilation acts as an introduction to this electric, cool and uplifting music that was affecting so many enthusiastic dancers and DJ/collectors. All the tracks on here are taken from one of the most prolific and emerging labels for this genre, Muse Records, that offered the complete spectrum of styles to fit in with this emerging scene crossing over with jazz fusion, be bop, vocals, electric keyboards, and percussion."
Double-CD version features Michele Hendricks, Richie Cole, Emanuel K. Rahim & The Kahliqs, Dom Um Romao, Dave Pike, Mark Murphy, Viva Brasil, Walt Barr, Ron Eschete, Eric Kloss, Charlie Earland, David Schnitter, Dom Salvador, Dave Matthews' Big Band, Harold Ousley, Michael Carvin, and Bill Hardman.

Produced With Love is an extraordinary album from UK legend Joey Negro: a buoyant, life-affirming, disco-inspired album. It's hard to find enough superlatives to describe just how influential and prolific Dave Lee, aka Joey Negro, has been over the last three decades. One of music's major proponents of soulful, disco-tinged, vocal records, and without question instrumental music, is its development and popularization. No-one treats a loop, groove, or hook with as much care and attention as Joey Negro. Throughout his career, disco has been a key ingredient to his sound, and alongside the likes of Nile Rodgers, Daft Punk, Jamiroquai, and Dimitri From Paris, he's one of the few artists to have been keeping the disco fire burning. Produced With Love is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released, and the first for more than 20 years. And as the electronic music scene threatens to be overrun with bland and forgettable productions, Produced With Love proves that dance music with character still exists. And rather than rely on sampling older records, the overwhelming majority of music is newly recorded. Album opener "Prove That You're Feeling Me", featuring Diane Charlemagne, is without question one of the catchiest and most urgent disco recordings produced in the last decade. Evoking the great Nile Rogers and Chic at their funkiest, it trips along on an exquisite bassline with orchestral strings and Charlemagne's vocal lending the record a truly timeless quality. Joey Negro explains: "Unfortunately, between starting and finishing the project, the supremely talented Diane Charlemagne, the singer/songwriter who I co-wrote many songs with over last ten years, very sadly passed away. We had a great working relationship, which was both fun and honest. Most of my final collaborations with Diane, 'Overnight Sensation', 'Prove That You're Feeling Me' and the partly re-written remake of 'Must Be The Music' are on this album." R&B and house music mainstay Linda Clifford narrates on "Won't Let Go", a deep house cut that celebrates musical escapism, whilst "It's More Fun To Compute" -- an unlikely cover -- is a fully orchestrated disco rework of Dusseldorf's finest. Further highlights include an utterly transformed "Must Be The Music", whilst things get both dubby and jazzy on the Arthur Russell-evoking "Distorting Space Time". Also features: Sacha Williamson, Lifford, Angela Johnson, Horse Meat Disco, The Fatback Band, Melba Moore, The O'Jays, Alex Mills, Julian Crampton, Peven Everett, and Gwen Guthrie.
