Kalita Records unveil the second volume in their Borga Revolution! compilation series, focusing on the phenomenon of "burger highlife", a crossover of West African melodies with synthesizers, disco, and boogie that took over Ghanaian airwaves during the 1980s and beyond. The 1970s had witnessed an increased Western airtime and physical presence in Ghana introducing funk, soul and disco sounds to the region. By the turn of the decade the country was also enduring economic turmoil, with rising poverty, military dictatorships and long periods of enforced curfews (amongst other factors) making it impossible for artists to survive. As a result, many Ghanaian artists with a broader outlook began to pursue their careers in the West, moving to both Europe and America in search of stardom. It was here that Ghanaian musicians developed a digitized version of highlife music which fully embraced Western contemporary music styles and newly introduced technology such as the DX7 synthesizer and various drum machines. It is in this context in which the evolution of Ghanaian dance music and the emergence of "burger highlife" was born. With the Borga Revolution! series Kalita endeavor to tell this story, with prominent and lesser-known musicians' accounts and documentary evidence providing a comprehensive understanding of this shift to the digital age. Kalita Records announce the first ever reissue of student medical group the IgG Band's highly sought-after 1980 soul, funk, and disco grail Ultra/Sound. Originally privately released in a small run on bandmember Clifford Becker's Infusion Records imprint, the album has since become a treasured prize of but a handful of diehard collectors and DJs as a result of both its scarcity and quality. Now, in partnership with the band, Kalita shine a light on the album for the first time in over forty years, accompanied by never-before-seen archival photos and extensive interview-based liner notes. Formed in March 1979 out of a young group of musically talented students at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, the IgG Band was, as leader Clifford Becker recalls, first created "to play music to please ourselves and friends, and as an outlet to the ever pending and growing pressure of our medical education." However, by 1980 the IgG Band had developed enough original material that they were ready to put their music to wax, and Ultra/Sound was recorded at Hilltop Recording Studios in Nashville, with each band member contributing their part separately when their busy medical schedules allowed. Each song on the record was notably written mostly by only one band member -- "IgG Theme", "I Still Want You", and "Daydreaming" by Kendal Foster, "Another Love Gone" and "When I Think of You" by Solomon Pollard, "Funky Music" by Murray Riggins, and "Infusion" by Kermit White. As Murray explains, "initially every band member had the opportunity to contribute original songs and from there we collaborated to make each song better." The record was released at the close of 1980, manufactured and distributed by the band themselves. The album was a local success, and the band sold out within a short space of time, with most copies sold to family, friends, and Meharry College students. However, at the end of their studies at Meharry the band went their separate ways. Their educational qualifications required that they partake in internships, and these were at different hospitals in different states. As Murray divulges, "each of us chose our own path and to live our own separate lives. We have stayed in contact periodically over the years, but we have never been able to get together and play music because of our medical practice time constraints."

Following on from their Nana Tuffour retrospective in 2018, here Kalita focus again on the 1980s phenomenon of burger highlife, a crossover of highlife melodies with synthesizers, disco and boogie that took over Ghanaian airwaves during the decade and beyond. Originally privately released in a small run by Wilson himself, "Asew Watchman" and "Mabre Agu" were both recorded in Brixton, London in 1988 after his relocation from Ghana to the UK in search of stardom, following the footsteps of burger highlife stars Pat Thomas, George Darko and Thomas Frempong. Sadly, however, after pressing one thousand copies of the album, and although the music itself rivalled the very best burger highlife of the time, Wilson was beset by various obstacles both in London and back home. As such, the record was unable to make the headway that it deserved, and the music was soon lost into obscurity. Nevertheless, with original copies now selling for triple figures on the second-hand market, and after a two-year search to track Wilson down, Kalita now work with and celebrate the outstanding burger highlife of Wilson Boateng.

For their first release of 2020, Kalita Recprds unearth New York-based band Cross Island's highly sought-after 1978 disco single "East of the Apple". Originally privately released on Raja Records as a promotional single to attract tourism and businesses to Long Island, New York, the record has since become highly prized by both DJs and collectors alike, in particular for its B side "Just A Little Different" mix. Here, as a 12" single, Kalita Records re-release it officially for the first time, twinned with Al Kent remixes of both "East of the Apple" and the band's unreleased recording "Wave", both sourced from the original multi-track master tapes. In addition, Kalita Records accompany the release with never-before-seen press photos and extensive interview-based liner notes. Cross Island consisted of seven Long Island-based musicians, influenced on one side by The Beatles and The Beach Boys and on the other by George Martin, Quincy Jones, and Peter Frampton. In 1978, the Long Island Tourism Commission approached the band to ask if they would write and release a record to help promote the local area. The resulting single "East of the Apple" was recorded over the space of just five days in Syosset, a town on the north shore of the island. Although ten thousand copies of "East of the Apple" were pressed, its local purpose and the lack of a distribution network meant that it failed to receive a great amount of airtime outside of the surrounding area, available to purchase only in nearby record shops, on merchandise tables at gigs and as Long Island tourism souvenirs. However, as band co-leader Rob Meade explains, it's purpose had been achieved -- "it was written to be a theme song for Long Island businesses and to draw attention to what a cool place Long Island was. After we released the record, many people were singing the hook, 'If you do it, do it better on Long Island', and so in that regard it was a great success." Here, Kalita Records gives this massive disco single it's just deserts, with Al Kent's two accompanying remixes extending and re-molding the recordings into two modern club weapons whilst retaining and respecting the authenticity of their original sound.

Kalita Records present the first ever 12" reissue of Henry Turner Jr.'s hugely sought-after 1980 disco single, "Music", backed by the first ever re-release of his 1984 boogie single "Forever Us". The latter is equally as great, commanding three-figure sums and demonstrating clearly America's development by the mid-1980s away from disco and towards the boogie craze. In addition, the release is accompanied with a never-before-seen press photo of Henry's band Crystal and interview-based liner notes. Based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Crystal band consisted of Henry on guitar with local musicians Ranches Hall on keyboards and vocals and Ricky Broomfield on drums. By the tail end of the 1970s, Crystal had settled themselves into the local music scene, and performed at many nearby venues. By 1980, the band were ready to record their first single, "Music", in the hope that it would be a radio hit. As Henry explains, "we were driven performers and 'Music' was the perfect tool to get us radio play". They decided to pay to lay down and press their music at Soundsmith Recording Studio, which had the ability to not only record but to also manufacture and release their music on the studio's own eponymously-named label. Only five hundred copies of the record were pressed, distributed by the band themselves, meaning that today, copies almost never turn up for sale. A fantastic disco track, upon release the band deservedly succeeded in their original aim, and it was a radio hit in Baton Rouge. Within four years of "Music's" release, Ranches Hall had left the band, reducing it to two core members: Henry and Ricky. However, still eager for success, the now-slimmed down Crystal band recorded "Forever Us" over a couple of days as a follow-up single to "Music", laying down their instruments at the local Sound Trax Studio, produced by Henry himself. In contrast to the number of additional session musicians that had performed on their first record, here only Henry and Ricky contributed, playing all the instruments and providing the vocals themselves. On release, the record received notable success, not only in the US but also across the pond on the UK scene. Since then, Henry has continued to release both his and other musicians' music on his own Hit City label, as well as developing his musical style and cementing himself in at the core of the Baton Rouge music scene.

Recorded over the space of just one week at Real To Reel Studios in Stockbridge, Georgia, Emerson and Leora intended to release If You Need Me, Call Me as a follow-up to "Sending All My Love Out". However, due to familial responsibilities and health complications the album was never released to the public, and the original master tapes have remained locked away until now. Kalita Records make available once more Okyerema Asante's highly sought-after Ghanaian disco monster, Sabi (Get Down), produced in collaboration with Oneness of Juju leader Plunky Nkabinde. After touring the world and recording with Hugh Masekela, Lonnie Liston Smith and Oneness of Juju, Sabi (Get Down) was Okyerema's first solo record, released privately in limited numbers on his label Atumpan Records in 1980/81. Recorded and manufactured in the USA, but only ever released on the African continent, this self-funded, scarce, and brilliant Afro-disco LP regularly exchanges hands for eye-watering prices. Here, Sabi (Get Down) is repressed in its original, 14 minute-long form (check out some breathtaking vocals by Oneness of Juju's Lady Eka Ete at around 13 minutes!); the title track is backed by the equally impressive "That's My Girl" on the B side. In addition, it is accompanied by extensive interview-based liner notes and never-before-seen photos, detailing Okyerema's career from his membership of Ghana's legendary band Hedzolleh to performing with Paul Simon and Fleetwood Mac twenty years later. Sabi (Get Down) has so far received fantastic support from leading DJs such as Gilles Peterson (who named it the eighth-best reissue of 2017), Hunee, Antal, Palms Trax, Alexander Nut, Red Greg, Nick The Record, John Gomez, Lakuti, Dan Shake, and many others! Kalita Records present the first ever and official reissue of Kallaloo's sought-after 1982 disco single "Star Child", accompanied by interview-based liner notes. Originally released on Jeffrey Turpin's Trinidadian record label IDA. Kallaloo consisted of various Trinidadian musicians including Keith Alexander and Peter Wayne Barkley. Keith had been well-respected as a member of the Trinidadian group Impact, and was later to become an in-demand producer and composer under the name of Keith Diamond, responsible for various hits by Billy Ocean, Donna Summer, Starpoint and Melba Moore. In contrast, Peter was a well-known recording session drummer. An astonishing piece of Caribbean disco.
