Taken from Abdullah Ibrahim's summer 2023 sold-out headline date at London's Barbican Centre, 3 follows suit and is spread across two performances -- the first is recorded without an audience ahead of the concert straight to analogue on a 1" Scully tape machine, which had previously been used by Elvis at the famous Memphis-based Sun Studios. The second recording is taken from the evening's performance itself with Ibrahim performing in a unique trio which includes Cleave Guyton (flute, piccolo, saxophone) who has performed alongside the likes of Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, and Joe Henderson, as well as lauded bassist and cellist Noah Jackson, both of which are members of EKAYA and featured on Ibrahim's Top 3 Billboard Jazz album The Balance.

Each year on October 9th, Abdullah Ibrahim performs a solo piano concert at the Hirzinger Hall in South Germany in order to celebrate his birthday. Due to lockdown restrictions, this traditional birthday concert was replaced with the opportunity to record a solo piano performance. Hirzinger Hall, in Riedering, South East Germany, is famous for its incredible acoustics, and Ibrahim's solitary performance lends itself perfectly to the space. The recording crew was sparse, the audience non-existent, yet Ibrahim's communion with the piano remains warm and timeless.

Entitled The Balance, this project features Abdullah Ibrahim's long-time septet Ekaya, a line-up that he's been recording with since 1983. In this case, the album was recorded over the course of one day at London's RAK Studios last November. The lush horn lines, lilting melodies, and uplifting chord progressions are characteristic of Abdullah's own particular brand of Township Jazz. This is contrasted with various solo piano improvisations, which epitomize the nostalgic yet hopeful nature of Abdullah's musical spirit. Hence, The Balance.
"Getting the balance just right has always been Ibrahim's great strength, drawing from a source but keeping it fresh." -- Julian Cowley, The Wire
"A modern master -- his graceful playing leans on equal measures of force and restraint, of dense clusters and open space. Mr. Ibrahim's music is dotted by satisfying, sometimes stunning, passages of repose." -- Larry Blumenfeld, Wall Street Journal

"The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Water From An Ancient Well features the pianist/composer with a very strong septet. Such superior musicians as tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford, altoist Carlos Ward, baritonist Charles Davis, and trombonist Dick Griffin are heard at their most creative and emotional on these eight Ibrahim originals. Many of the melodies are among Ibrahim's finest compositions."

Restocked. "Pianist-composer Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand) has long ranked among South Africa's giants alongside Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, and the late Kippie Mokoetsi. A master of improvisation with a distinctive African edge, the exiled Cape Town musician has developed a musical style over the past 30 years that defies categorization. Rather, it is a fascinating mosaic of diverse traditions including African rutal and township rhythms, classical jazz, and gospel. South African folk melodies are enriched with Western harmonies, coalescing into a gracefully fluid and intensely spiritual whole. Best known for his hypnotic and introspective stream-of-consciousness compositions and his innovative interpretations of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Billy Strayhorn classics, Ibrahim's music is at once accessible and complex, intriguing and lyrical. He has indefatigably explored and fused classical jazz with the multitude of influences that make up traditional and contemporary South Afrian music."
