Reissue, originally released in 1962. Trumpet Africaine was Hugh Masekela's debut album, recorded in New York and released in 1962, two years after Masekela had left South Africa in reaction to the increasing inhumanity of the apartheid regime. Masekela's trumpet shines on top of Hugo Montenegro's fine orchestral arrangements while the track list includes, among others, five fresh instrumental versions of Miriam Makeba's songs. Trumpet Africaine was an important early statement from one of the most representative South African musicians of its time.

Reissue, originally released in 1963. Jon Hendricks one of the greatest jazz singers of all time as well as one of the originators of vocalese style in a declared tribute to the unique art of Joao Gilberto. Hendricks's inspired rendition of Gilberto's sophisticated repertoire shows love and devotion for the Brazilian tradition through a series of accurate and faithful arrangements. Needless to add that Hendricks's hyper smooth singing is perfectly baked by a hi-class line-up featuring among others: Pete and Conte Candoli (trumpets), Buddy Colette (flute), and Laurindo Almeida (guitar). In one word: superb!

Reissue. Recorded in 1963 and originally released on Colpix, Highlife was one of Randy Weston's first declared homages to African music and heritage. A direct fruit of his first trip to Nigeria in 1961, the album is considered one the highpoints in Weston's long and articulated career. Beautifully arranged by the great Melba Liston, the music reveals the unbroken relationship between the African ancestral sensibility and the Afro-American jazz experience. Under the direction of Melba Liston and pianist Randy Weston here we have a first-class group of musicians including heavyweights such as Ray Copeland (trumpet), Jimmy Cleveland (trombone), Quentin Jackson (trombone), Julius Watkins (French horn), Aaron Bell (tuba), Budd Johnson (saxophone), Booker Ervin (saxophone), Peck Morrison (bass), Charlie Persip (drums), Frankie Dunlop (drums), Archie Lee (percussion), and George Young (percussion). One of the greatest Pan-African vision examples in music.

A bunch of talented, solid studio musicians who formed the foundation for the legendary Stax sound. Originally issued in early 1962, Do The Pop-Eye was the band's second album, a collection of minimal, infectious soul-funk-rock instrumentals. Among the players: guitarist and composer Steve Cropper, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, and organist Booker T. Jones. Just the right people to lay down the perfect groove for a quintessential album of instrumental music to dance to.

Reissue. Canadian composer Bruce Haack one of the true pioneers in the field of electronic and children's music. Originally released in 1962, Dance, Sing & Listen was Haack's debut album. Following instructions from children dance teacher Esther Nelson the album comes as a hyper-eclectic work based on a great variety of sound material. A hybrid soup of medieval, country, classical, and pop styles including tons of electronic effects, guitars, banjos, and other acoustic string instruments and bongos! This is open-minded music for children at its best.

Visionary composer Raymond Scott was a pure genius largely known thanks to the massive recycling and adaptation of his music for cartoons. "Powerhouse" the title track of this beautiful collection is one of his best-known compositions for Warner Brothers animated cartoons. Scott's Quintette recorded "Powerhouse" in New York on February 20, 1937. The first use in a cartoon occurred in the 1943 Looney Tunes short "Porky Pig's Feat" and since then, you can count hundreds of apparitions, versions, and quotes, from Bugs Bunny to The Simpsons via Kronos Quartet and Don Byron's versions. In other words: a true classic piece of music beyond time and genres. The Raymond Scott Quintet: Raymond Scott - piano, celeste; Dave Wade, Russ Case - trumpet; Pete Pumiglio - clarinet; Dave Harris - tenor saxophone; Lou Shoobe, Fred Whiting - bass; Johnny Williams - drums.

Honey Pie Records present a reissue of The Jazz Epistles' self-titled album, originally released in 1959. The Jazz Epistles were the very first South African jazz group who broke away from the swinging and danceable jazz forms in vogue during the 1950s. A group formed by strong personalities like pianist Dollar Brand, later known as Abdulah Hibrahim, trumpeter Hugh Masekela, saxophonist Kippi Moeketzi, trombonist Jonas Gwangwa, bassist Johnny Getze, and drummer Makaya Ntschoko. A bunch of jazz modernists who already in the late 1950s, under the influence of the American "Bop" attitude began to switch on a more complex and hip music style. In 1959, just before breaking up, the Jazz Epistles released their first and only album, a great piece of work which stands as the first album released by a Black South-African band. A cultural manifesto as part of the anti-apartheid struggle of the time.
