"This is a short introduction to the artist Phillip Sollmann, who just finished his first conceptual album Something Is Missing for Dial-Records Hamburg. In times of relatively random digital number crunching this is a portion of drones dry as a desert, static as a lake, soft as the wind and close as a whisper. Produced during the last two years, this piece of work is the result of a thinking on theory of sound in space. While studying computer music at a Viennese university, Phillip Sollmann got less and less interested in the possibilities of real-time processing with it's glitches and grains -- and started to re-explore the work of people like La Monte Young, Charlemagne Palestine, C.M. Von Hausswolff, Yoko Ono or Phil Niblock, to name a few -- not to forget This Heat's influence. Listening closely will make you hear the artist raise his voice ('Room Five') on a specially intonated version of Jane's 'It's a Fine Day' (originally on Cherry Records, 1983). Also known as Efdemin for producing Detroit influenced slow and noisy minimal techno (which was released on Dial Rec and his own imprint Tobin), Phillip Sollmann concentrated more and more on ideas of sound related to space -- which lead to his idea of static music presented in two site specific installations, one in Vienna in 2004 and another one in 'Die Blaue Kugel' Hamburg, 2005. All pieces on Something Is Missing were done in a graphical programming environment and will be performed live in 2006, presenting his cyclical & shimmering tones to the audience."
