Double LP version. Includes download code. Steffi occupies a unique space in the realm of contemporary electronic music. Although she's a world renowned DJ, it's her work as a producer that has established an impressive, hard-won legacy. Soon after moving to Berlin in 2007, Steffi joined Ostgut Ton. To date she's released five albums, including two solo releases for Ostgut Ton, a co-production with Virginia, another with Analogue Cops as Third Side, and a collaboration as Doms & Deykers on Martyn's 3024 label. She owns and operates four labels: Klakson (with Dexter), Dolly, Dolly Deluxe, and Dolly Dubs. World Of The Waking State is Steffi's third solo album for Ostgut Ton and it's a musical departure for her and the label. Over ten tracks she embarks on entirely new electronic terrain for her productions, marking industrial spaces with superlunary warmth while exercising a refined knowledge of polyphony and arrangement. Subdued melodies interact with each other over implied harmonies and microcosmic drum patterns, luring its listeners into a world that is introverted, bewildering, and gratifying all at once. "Different Entities" opens with shaded harmonies and glitchy signals, while the pulsing "Continuum Of The Mind" develops with cyclical melodies swaying through staccato percussion. On "All Living Things", complex rhythms take the attention over the restrained melody. "The Meaning Of Memory" pairs low-slung, squidgy percussion with overcast melodic interactions and "Schools Of Thought" flickers through uncharted interplanetary spaces. "World Of The Waking State" pushes pulsing basslines and woeful refrains through an industrial void, while "Kokkie" flickers with acid tones over the languid bass drive. "Mental Events" paints a shadowy aura driven with echoing snares, and "Bounces Of Nature" flaunts meditative pads and expertly layered percussion. "Cease To Exist" brings together the mangled percussion and subtle melodies of the album to full effect. On World Of The Waking State, Steffi stretches her wings, having created the album in a period when she was free from the past and more comfortable in her own skin. The shift in her mindset led to a new freedom of exploration, enabling her to write more experimentally and logically. Gone are the classic drum sounds and conspicuous melodies of her previous works. Instead, Steffi's productions unify disparate molecular details to forge a greater whole, reflecting a serious commitment to abstract electronic composition. World Of The Waking State is a confident and mature work of complex rhythms and refined melodies.

Following the premiere of her first-ever live set at various festivals, Steffi revisits "JBW25" from her 2014 Power of Anonymity album (OSTGUT 032CD/018LP). Brooklyn-based duo Further Reductions (Shawn O'Sullivan and Katie Rose), who left a big impression on Steffi with their 2014 Woodwork LP on Cititrax, turn in an arrhythmic interpretation of "JBW25," pushed to the absolute fringes of dancefloor compatibility. Berghain resident Answer Code Request's "Vision" of "JBW25" adds a tough drum beat, percussion, and a stronger focus on the original's ambient textures; his "Revision" is more break-heavy, melodic, and dreamy, while setting a darker tone and mood overall.

Following up 2014's acclaimed Power of Anonymity (OSTGUT 032CD/018LP), Steffi presents three versions of the uplifting, percussion-driven "Treasure Seeking," co-produced by Dexter and featuring seductive vocals from Virginia. Here, the trio goes back to the drawing board to create versions that reflect on Power of Anonymity's electro aesthetic. While the new "130 BPM Version" puts strong emphasis on filled club floors with twirling synth stabs and a continuous up-tempo rhythm, the "Diep Version" starts off with heavy claps and a pulsing bassline until a set of soothing strings starts altering the overall mood from a dark space toward the light.

Double LP version. Berlin-based DJ and producer Steffi returns with her second album Power of Anonymity on Ostgut Ton. "I wanted to start working on my new album without any personal or external expectations and I was seeking an emancipated, unshackled approach in the album's construction. I intended to include electro and IDM elements as these are my roots: it's the music that I first started DJing. After almost 20 years I got the feeling that I've come full circle, so I wanted to make an album that I, as a DJ, would like to carry in my record bag. My first LP -- Yours & Mine (OSTGUT 016CD/008LP) -- is very conceptual, it has a certain vibe that not only fits the club but also works on a stereo or in the car. Power of Anonymity is much more about how I see the dancefloor these days, and my aim was to take that vision into the studio. I asked myself what would happen if I could produce day after day without DJ gigs and travel interrupting my flow. These long stints in the studio allowed me to divide my time into three single blocks: initially I would only do jams and make sketches, followed by a phase for arranging and editing all recordings, and then a mixdown period for the album. Concentrating on creating Power of Anonymity has inspired me to carry on tapping deeper into my creative vein. I'm looking forward to the next time when I can step into the studio. Being focused is the key." --Steffi, Berlin, August 2014

Esteemed selector, producer and Panorama Bar resident Steffi presents the fifth mix CD in the series, showcasing the variety and depth of sound to be found during her sets at the club. On Panorama Bar 05 we find a mature and confident Steffi channeling her years of experience as a record collector, DJ, and beat-maker into 80 seamless minutes. Reflecting all the angles of her classically-inspired, raw and profoundly warm sound, we are guided through a rather grand lesson in house music. Opening with the gliding tones and field recordings of Palisade's "18:30" -- a Redshape-produced space-out cut, Steffi initially expresses her love of earthy, organic and submerged club tracks, with Big Strick's "Hayday" transmitted direct from Detroit, and the classic depths of Chris Mitchell's "Lonely Nights." Another brand new track recruited by Steffi for the mix, the technoid-Chicago sound of Fred P stands out in the beautifully contemporary "Project 05" -- segueing perfectly with Naoki Shinohara's suitably titled "Timeless." Juju & Jordash supply their bubbling, ecstatic "A Stab in the Dark" -- another Ostgut Ton exclusive, while congas and gorgeously loose and dusty vibes roll up with "Reality" from John Barera and Will Martin. This energy keeps on flowing as Steffi brings in a cut from the inimitable Sex Tags crew -- courtesy of DJ Fett Burger -- while Juergen Junker's "Post Reunion" should satisfy any remaining raw-cut-up-disco needs. Steffi includes her pumping and acidic "DB011" -- one of three exclusives on the mix coming out as a 12" on her Dolly label, alongside with Dexter's classy "Jawada" and John Barera and Will Martin's contribution. As the intensity grows in the final half-hour, it's then left to a soaring techno display from Obsolete Music Technology to bring things right up to date, and finally Trevino's "Juan Two Five" closes the mix, its undulating machine funk easing us down, feeling complete. Steffi shows off her talents here with a captivating and classy mix of underground house and techno. All the tracks she included, and the producers she invited to contribute, help to define part of her identity -- much like the culture of DJing with records, that she brings to clubs with love, intensity, and passion. Other artists include: Endian, Chris Mitchell, BLM, and DJ Skull.

Steffi returns with a 12" for Ostgut Ton, showing a much tougher side to her ever-evolving sound, reminiscent of the favorites from not-forgotten warehouse parties where techno and house met on one united floor. "Schraper" combines a clean beat structure and scraping percussion with an epic synth arrangement to hypnotic effect and energy levels cranked. The string version of the B-side track "Tank" creates a mellower mood while the beat version builds and pumps.

This EP showcases three special remixes of tracks off Steffi's debut album Yours & Mine (OSTGUT 016CD/008LP). Staffan Lindberg's hypnotic, rave-tinged mix of "Yours" weaves an intricate tale for the dancefloor -- nothing is rushed and the classic elements have room to shine in his fluid arrangement. Lone's remix works the Chicago-vibed "Arms" into a magical cosmic future-acid trip. The Analogue Cops' pumping remix of "You Own My Mind" is a perfect example of their trademark rough, tripped-out house vibe.

2x12" version. On the debut album by Berlin-based Dutch DJ/producer Steffi, you will discover an even further developed producer who shares her personal journey. A long period of intense experimentation and self-discovery led to this sensitive, instinctive and extremely insightful long-player. Carefully mixing old and new, warm analog synth and drum textures flow in unison with modern studio finesse over nine tracks, each telling its own story. Ethereal, hypnotic passages and positive, uplifting messages meet temperate, slow-building vibes and heart-wrenching moments. Often, simplicity blurs into satisfying complexity. Moments of sheer joy arise against the backdrop of a rich and elegantly-controlled exploration of sound. The opening track "Lilo" is a soothing, harmonious forecast of this deep dance music album; swirling, and reduced. A warm solid state thump drives it however, and it becomes clear that the beauty in Steffi's house music lies in this meeting of classic, emotion-drenched melodies and bold, earthy drums. The tactile "Piem" rises and climbs with a strong late-night intensity before "Yours" featuring Virginia comes to the fore. Striking a clever balance between positive, addictive pop and straight-up club energy, this vocal-led future-classic is a loud and proud testament to how far Steffi has come -- not only as a producer, but as a DJ who understands the need for balance, control and release. Perhaps an ode to the many foundations of house that have no doubt inspired Steffi, "Arms" is a string-led jack track, a slow burner in the best sense, and all the better for it. Similarly, "Manic Moods" sells itself on the strength of its handful of carefully-crafted analog synth lines, slowly fusing to become one while her beats urge us forward. The urgent, sci-fi tones and extended, soaring strings of "Mine" bring it back to the club as heady images of warehouses past, present and future flash before you. This retro-futurism is then taken further with the muscular "Nightspacer," whose NY house roots are fleshed out by blossoming pads and an unstoppable, throbbing, traveling vibe. Drawing the album towards its close, the deeply spaced "You Own My Mind," featuring Virginia's beautifully smooth vocals, washes over and wraps around you in a melancholic blanket of sound. Deeply personal to the last, "Moving Lips" could be that special last embrace; one more moment to end the night and yet keep you longing for more.
