Double LP version. Bedroom Tapes is comprised solely of lost material from a recently discovered box of cassettes that emerged in the process of a house move. These tracks capture some of Paul Woolford's most wide-eyed and naïve creative impulses at a tender age. Seemingly lost forever, some were part of sessions that led to him being signed to now-defunct UK techno imprint Blue Basique. This is the first chapter in this archive and an intimate portrait of the artist at a key stage of his creative development. The tracks have been carefully mastered at Metropolis with a loving hand by Matt Colton who has been meticulous to retain their idiosyncrasies. Manufactured at optimal media, Germany.

Double LP version. Special Request returns from hibernation with Vortex, an album he made in his underpants. Of the new material, he says, "I had a right fucking doss making this. Fuck all that conceptual guff m888" The music here is strictly bowel-evacuating bangers; those of a nervous disposition should watch out for incontinence. Many people think one can't do anything truly new in electronic music; Special Request disagrees. Upon playing some of the new tracks to a friend, the question "are u alright m8?" was asked; now the avid listener, can answer for themselves. Cut and mastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis, manufactured at optimal media, Germany. Magenta and green vinyl.

Special Request joins forces with Nina Kraviz and Anastasia Kristensen on the four-track EP Through The Looking Glass. Nina Kraviz provides two interpretations of "Curtain Twitcher": "Alice Was Here Remix" takes the intensity of the original and boils it into a 4/4 spin of frenzied basslines and distorted acoustics. For the "Samba Version", syncopated polyrhythms take charge of a fragmented melody. "Looking Glass" lures you down the rabbit hole with mysterious bleeps, stormy breaks, and jungle-ist percussion. Anastasia Kristensen's remix of "Tiresias" marches its way through a field of swollen bass and glitchy percussion.

Belief System is a new album on the Fabric-run label Houndstooth from Special Request, the project that sees Paul Woolford continue to defy expectations. Belief System comprises 23 tracks recorded over the course of three years, using sounds from Woolford's archives that date all the way back to 1993. The album presents a new style for the producer with vast layers of atmospherics, unhinged modular work, and contact microphone recordings, as well as the introduction of stark soundtrack pieces. The album follows the sold-out six-track EP Stairfoot Lane Bunker (HTH 073EP) which was made up of tracks taken from his FabricLive 91 mix CD (FABRIC 182CD), both released earlier in 2017. Resident Advisor, WIRE Magazine, DJ Mag, and Mixmag all listed Soul Music (HTH 012CD/LP) on their 2013 "Albums of the Year" lists. Paul Woolford is a regular DJ in Ibiza and the festival circuit around the world. He has released albums and EPs on Houndstooth, XL Recordings, and Running Back.

FABRIC 182CD
|
Paul Woolford, aka Special Request, provides a continuous mix for the 91st installment of Fabric's mix series. Following a slightly surreal and cavernous beginning, the classic UK techno of Caustic Window (an alias of Richard D. James - Aphex Twin) opens up proceedings and laying the foundation of the mix. The momentum builds as the ruthless tones of 214's "Frostbite" signify a turn into darker waters. The murky tension sets the scene for the first of six new Special Request tracks, "Redrum". Then, Stefan Vincent's lush emotive "Aquilae" and a voice recording from Cristian Vogel's "Atomic Layers" provide a pause to breathe before the descent into the second half, where the mix travels rapidly through various shades of jungle, drum & bass, and noise, from the dubwise movement of Forest Drive West, to classic Dillinja and beyond with the mix peaking with the furious jungle of "Stairfoot Lane Bunker" and the drum & bass of DJ Trace & Nico. Special Request Recent BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and 3x 12" EP releases on XL Recordings, the same label as Adele, Radiohead and The Prodigy. Special Request's debut album on Houndstooth, Soul Music (HTH 012CD/LP, 2013) was listed #1 album of the year by DJ Mag. The mix follows Special Request's BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and three 12" EP releases on XL Recordings. Also features: Aleksi Perälä, DJ Stingray, Plastician, Claro Intelecto, Polygon Window, Abul Mogard, Dexter, Alden Tyrell, Stanislav Tolkachev, Shapednoise, Justin K Broadrick, Rood Project, DJ Future & Eric Electric, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Nolige, ASC, Carl Craig, and Mika Vaino.

HTH 012CD
|
Following a run of four incendiary 12"s on his own imprint that drew attention from right across the dance music community, UK producer and DJ Paul Woolford delivers Soul Music, his debut full-length album as Special Request -- diving even deeper into the raw energy of UK pirate radio influences that informed his previous EPs. Using a studio built almost exclusively from vintage hardware and boosted by industrial-strength EQ and an FM transmitter, Woolford constructs what he refers to as "false memories" -- broadcasting his material in order to sample and re-incorporate it in a myriad of different ways. The outcome of this unorthodox method is an album of considerable weight. The CD version includes a bonus disc featuring the Special Request VIP of Tessela's "Hackney Parrot" alongside the remix of Lana Del Rey's "Ride," further tracks from the previous 12"s, plus unreleased reworks from Detroit's Anthony Shakir, New York's Anthony Naples, Leipzig's Kassem Mosse & Mix Mup, Chicago's Hieroglyphic Being and London's Lee Gamble. Not for the faint-hearted. Presented in bespoke PVC sleeve with spot varnish pattern.
