"Art Blakey is one of the greatest jazz drummers and first made name for himself in the 1940s when working with bebop musicians Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Fletcher Henderson. In the mid-1950s, he formed The Jazz Messengers together with Horace Silver, which quickly became known as an incubator for young talent. 35 years after forming The Jazz Messengers, Blakey entered his final year still at it, and with the many promising young players around the time, he expanded the collective from its usual quintet or sextet into a septet for this fine recording session, which includes 'Brain Stormin'' and 'Kenji's Walk.' Due to Blakey constantly persuading his musicians to write music, The Jazz Messengers stayed young in spirit, just like its leader. Chippin' In features Javon Jackson and Dale Barlow, and is available as a limited edition on white colored vinyl and affixed on the protective sleeve is the 50th Anniversary Timeless Jazz sticker."

"Blue Night is the expanded edition of Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers recording released in 1985. Art Blakey led the Jazz Messengers for 35 years, mentoring countless musicians and encouraging their growth into influential bandleaders. By 1984-85, his band included five prodigious talents: Terence Blanchard (trumpet), Donald Harrison (alto/soprano sax), Jean Toussaint (tenor sax), Lonnie Plaxico (bass), and Mulgrew Miller (piano). Despite being 65, Blakey remained as vibrant as his young bandmates, inspiring and pushing them to develop their distinct musical voices. Blue Night showcases the Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers hard bop excellence, featuring originals by Blanchard, Harrison, Toussaint alongside the classic 'Body An Soul.' The 2LP expanded edition of Blue Night features alternate takes of 'Two Of Kind,' 'Blue Minor' and 'Mr. Combinated,' includes liner notes by Scott Yanow and is available on vinyl for the first time."
