2009 release. Stereo/5.1 multichannel hybrid CD/SACD release that can be played on any CD player. Paul Ben-Haim was born in Munich and was the assistant to Bruno Walter and Knappertsbusch at the State Opera before becoming Kapellmeister in Augsburg. Later he was without work and a refugee. For the late discovery of his music we must thank the Jakobsplatz Orchestra Munich. Daniel Grossmann presents works from those years during which the composer sought to establish a new life in Israel: the 'Sonata in G,' written for Yehudi Menuhin, the Oriental Lieder 'ohne Worte,' the Psalm setting 'Machet die Tore weit,' and the main work, his 'Kabbalat Shabbat.' The Sabbath, the day of the Lord, the day of peace and inner reflection, is greeted here with joyous song. One walks across the fields, and meets the day, dressed accordingly. This we learn from the verse of the mystic Schlomo Alkabez, and Paul Ben-Haim interprets the texts with simple tunes that serve the spirit of the litany. Performed by: Julia Rebekka Adler (viola), Axel Gremmelspacher (piano), Zvi Zeitlin (violin), Valerie Condoluci (soprano), Christian Miedl (baritone/cantor), Chamber Choir of Orchester Jakobsplatz Munchen.
