Artist: RUTS DC MEETS MAD PROFESSOR
Title: Rhythm Collision Vol. 1
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: EB 002CD
A mid-price re-release of UK-based Ruts DC's definitive punk/reggae fusion record Rhythm Collision Vol. 1. This version is further enhanced with five 12" bonus and vocal remixes. Originally released in 1982 on the band's own Bohemian Records, this album was immensely influential in UK punk/reggae circles, and was subsequently re-released on the New York 'ROIR' label. Mad Professor's memorable mixes helped the LP to gain some cult status. Meeting at a record store, indulging in their mutual love of funk grooves, as well as playing in the pub rock band Hit & Run, the line-up fluctuated in the early days before settling with Paul Fox on guitar, Dave Ruffy on drums, John Segs on bass and Malcolm Owen on vocals. Attracting the attention of the Southall music collective People Unite, they recorded their classic single "In a Rut" and rollercoasted to pop stardom, signing to Virgin Records, scoring three Top 30 hits, recording the classic The Crack LP, as well as some special John Peel sessions. They were one of the most powerful live bands and always maintained their credibility where others fell for rock 'n' roll glamour. After touring Europe and the U.S., the band were exhausted and, devastatingly for all concerned, Malcolm Owen was dead. The three carried on the band, appending DC to their name, and redirected their music. They released an initial Ruts DC LP Animal Now but were less than happy with the results. Reggae had always been a major part of the Ruts sound, and they chose to develop that and remove themselves and their music from the mainstream glare. They sought out the up-and-coming star of UK reggae production Neil "The Mad Professor" Fraser who had recently set up his Ariwa studio and Rhythm Collision was the first major project recorded in it. This is funk-fueled reggae swaddled in dub, and daubed all over with loud, brash and catchy punk.

Artist: DUBBLESTANDART
Title: Heavy Heavy Monster Dub
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: EB 049CD
"Out of Vienna -- Dubblestandart is working since the early 90's for Dub Music as their musical direction -- combining mid-European inspirations with their love for reggae music. We've been in the studio together with Mikey Dread, Sly & Robbie, Dillinger a. o. to work on tracks that should redefine the meaning of dub. Listen to hybrid dub versions with musicians from the international dub community, showing the dub planet is a growing culture. Dub music today appears to be attractive to the alternative-minded, to people continually curious about the other side of the story, the side that isn't told by world leaders, omnipresent and terrorizing news media and big industry. Tracks like 'Terrorists & Inhalers' (feat. Keith Le Blanc), 'Evil Empire' or 'Watch The Future' (feat. Camel) have been inspired by a critical mind. We don't consider our music being just easy listening stuff, more than that our sound shall give an impression about the real power of dub, healing the western world mind fuck with music. Because this is our job and dub reggae music is our roots. (listen to Mikey Dreads/Mad Professors version of 'Dub Is The Roots!') Rhythm tracks for 'Heavy Heavy Monster Dub' and 'Preemptive Dub' were laid down by Sly & Robbie. Our partner Devon D supervised the Jamaican part of the production. When the tapes were returned to Vienna, we finished the songs at Go East Studio, providing the original Dubblestandart sound, inspired by Europe's melting vibes. By then Dreadzone and Manasseh remixed these tracks. Seven Dub from Paris also added a wonderful 'Preemptive Dub' version. Real urban dub has been contributed by Sounds From The Ground from London, who worked on 'Evil Empire' and '10 Tons Of Dope'. This is big city dub style, deeper than deep. Long time was spent traveling and preparing this record. In New York, London, Paris and Kingston people were met and we took in their feelings about life and love, their ways of looking at the changing music scene and last but not least their concern about the future of this planet. (Where will the so-called leaders lead us to?)We now present you with the culmination of this journey: 15 smooth dub tracks, that shall make u feel good and positive about life."

Artist: AFRICA UNITE
Title: In Dub
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: EB 051CD
"Unite...Africa Unite...! For more than 20 years, the band from Turin-Pinerola, Italy, has been cooking up a storm. Founded in 1981, the year of Bob Marley's death, the band named itself after one of the master's great songs. Since then, they have released more than 10 albums and in October their first DVD hit the market. Echo Beach is honoured to be able to bring to fans all around the world a very special dub album, which until now has been available only in a limited vinyl-only edition in Italy. The album is bursting with highlights, including an outstanding dub version by Mad Professor, dubbed at London's Ariwa Studio, and three brilliant Bob Marley cover versions: 'Is It Love', 'Crazy Baldheads' and 'Rebel Music'. The 8-man band reveal their true class in these cover versions. A strong roots foundation drives this whole project forward -- minimalist hints of electronic tricks and highlights are cunningly used here and there to great effect. Africa Unite are a highly experienced, fantastically tight live band -- as is demonstrated by two irresistible live tracks. One of the classiest, most attractive albums ever released by Echo Beach."

Title: King Size Dub Vol.11
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: EB 055CD
The latest in an extensive and successful series of crucial dub recordings from label Echo Beach. The current release King Size Dub, Vol. 11 is another impressive example of how dub has crossed cultural boundaries and progressed with all its reference points between commerce and innovation. Previous releases in the series have featured both well-established artists of the genre as well as some of dub's more obscure crew. The exhilarating variety of styles on Vol. 11 (reggae, soul, pop, dancehall, trip-hop, dope beats) is the pivot for more "logical dubgression" with all the usual -- and some very unusual -- suspects of the remixer and artist set. From the Viennese heavy monster dub of Dubblestandart, to the South

African punk-dub of Kalahari Surfers, to the Moroccan ambient trancedub combination of Azzdine with Bill Laswell, this compilation is designed to continue your education and enhance your understanding of dub while simultaneously getting you to move your feet. Other artists include: Dub Guerilla, Math Doly, Alpendub, Divination, Keith Le Blanc & Bim Sherman, Noiseshaper, Seven Dub (feat. Paul St. Hilaire), Matthew, M21, Ari Up, Punks Jump Up vs. Springmine Desaster, and M&M.

Artist: DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL
Title: Nitro
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: EB 057CD
This is the debut full-length release from Swiss trio Dub Spencer & Trance Hill (Adrian Pflugshaupt, Marcel Stalder and Christian Niederer) on Echo Beach. Though they are self-proclaimed heroes of the spaghetti western hills, you won't find syrupy country tunes on Nitro, instead they indulge in space echo and plate reverb at the drop on '3'. Dub Spencer & Trance Hill roll into town armed with heavy reggae grooves and space electro sounds, all carried by pumping bass lines that almost hypnotically clear the path and gently caress your innards. Expect a wagon-load of live, laid-back, instrumental, almost psychedelic reggae, played with virtuosity, washed-out grooves, breaks, hints of other tracks, and all so thrillingly slooooow that they're sure to lose any shootout. Also find shuffling drums, warm bass lines, a gentle backbeat piano and lots and lots of echo. You could easily compare Dub Spencer & Trance Hill with Scorn meets King Tubby meets Joshua Redman. This is one wild, loping pony ride.

Artist: SISTA GRACY
Title: Yardy
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: EB 061CD
Sista Gracy, who originally hails from St. Mary, Jamaica, and moved to Germany in 1985, created a stir when at the 2005 German Reggae Awards in Hamburg she won the reggae queen title -- together with Zoe and Lilian Gold, ahead of a whole host of young up-and-coming reggae stars. Sista Gracy was born to music, and in the '60s and '70s her mother and father made a living by touring around the villages on Jamaica's north coast with their sound system. Sista Gracy is right at home with all the different music styles of the Caribbean, but has a particular affinity for reggae. She effortlessly switches between singing, singjaying and deejaying, and from roots to dancehall. Her lyrics are conscious, she sings about love, the injustices of life, her belief in the greatness of Jah -- but she also sings about the many beautiful, colorful things in this world. Reggae has always been a very male-dominated business, with women usually limited to sex-symbol and background singer status. Sista Gracy's musical background stands in stark contrast to this: a talented percussionist, together with her husband, a bassist, she played in the backing band Herbman Band before becoming the front woman in the '90s. They released several albums and 12"s before Sista Gracy with Ragga Fränkie and the Herbman Band set off on an extended German tour. In 1994, Sista Gracy was invited to perform at the world-famous and highly prestigious Reggae Sunsplash Festival in Jamaica, making the Herbman Band the very first German band to play to Jamaica's discerning festival audience. After a prolonged family break from the music business, Sista Gracy started recording the new album Yardy in 2005. The name "Yardy" expresses her strong bond with family and traditions, all of which is very strongly reflected in the spirit of the new album. In addition to collaborations with Gentleman, Sugar Minott, Dr. Ring Ding, Ragga Fränkie and Mephisto, the new album is split into three parts, (dancehall, roots and dub) and features a complete Sista Gracy showcase and neatly covers all the relevant sub-genres for reggae lovers. After a ten-year break, Sista Gracy seems stronger and fresher than ever. Germany's most important reggae artist.

Artist: DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL
Title: Return of the Supercops
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: EB 063CD
This is the second full-length release from Swiss trio Dub Spencer & Trance Hill (Adrian Pflugshaupt, Marcel Stalder and Christian Niederer) on Echo Beach. Monster dub spaghetti Western enters the second round: on Return Of The Supercops, these asphalt cowboys delve even deeper into the essence of dub, but at the same time manage to amp up the rock element. Psychedelic, instrumental reggae tunes are interrupted by poisonously piercing guitars, country sections are transformed into darkly limping grooves, sleepy dubby beats morph into pounding trance. And everything is driven relentlessly forward by a pumping bass line that almost hypnotically clears the path to the center and gently caresses the stomach. In 2006, Dub Spencer & Trance Hill unleashed their debut on to the prairies of the German and European music press and caused quite a dust storm. Nitro got top marks from countless magazines and was voted "Dub Album of the Month" by the German reggae Bible, Riddim. Cowboy up!

Artist: SAM RAGGA BAND
Title: In Dub
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: EB 065CD
Germany's Sam Ragga Band was founded in 1996 by Jan Eißfeldt (aka Jan Delay) and musicians from the Absolute Beginner backing band. The Sam Ragga Band plays a fascinating and beguiling mix of reggae with a generous smattering of pop and soul. Their spectrum ranges from roots reggae with German lyrics to dancehall-style songs sung in English. One of the band's signature features has been their use of a wide range of guest vocalists, whose diverse lyrical styles give the Sam Ragga Band their uniquely versatile, classy sound. In 2000, the Sam Ragga Band played some of the riddims on the legendary Jan Delay album, Searching For The Jan Souls Rebels. Later, they met London singer Seanie T. (renowned for his work with Roots Manuva and Masta Ace), and recorded their albums Loktown Hi-Life (2002), The Sound Of Sam Ragga (2004) and Situations (2006), all with vocals by Jan Delay, Sammy Deluxe, Flowin'Immo, Onejiru and Jessica Mcintyre, Esther Cowens, Patrice, Simone Watson and Nena. This exclusive dub album on Echo Beach sees remixers QP Laboratories, Pensi, Weedacoustix, Niko Sieveking and Martin Rothert -- all friends of the band -- work their magic on tracks off the last three Sam Ragga Band albums. Slowly and smoothly, echo and reverb silhouettes shimmer through the arrangements of these classic tracks, transforming them into the Sam Ragga Band, In Dub.

Artist: DUBXANNE
Title: Police in Dub
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: EB 067CD
Introducing DubXanne: a group of Hamburg-based musicians devoted to bringing out the original dub roots from the biggest band in '70s-'80s Britain, The Police. At the apex of their career, The Police were a massive, bleached-blond juggernaut, surfing a new wave sound which valued intellectual cool and lightly sprinkled ethnic influences over the discredited rock 'n' roll bluster of old. The first post-punk supergroup. At the end of 1977, over the Christmas period, Stewart Copeland played Sting some of his reggae records. When Summers returned to Britain from his vacation in the United States, he found his bandmates newly inspired by Jamaican sounds. Reggae rhythms finally shook The Police free from post-punk rock convention and the rest has become history -- to date, 40 million people all over the world have bought a Police record! The first recordings for Police In Dub sessions by DubXanne started in September 2006. After exhaustive scrutiny of the Police back catalog at EMI Music Publishing (which controls and manages the rights for Sting's songs) and lengthy negotiations with Sting's management team, final consent for the project was granted in March 2008. Now the world can sit back and look forward to dub versions of the biggest tunes by The Police. The musicians behind DubXanne are members of the group Okada (backing band for Zoe, Maxim, Don Abi to name a few): Mykal (drums), Marcus (bass), Manougazou (guitar) and Guido Craveiro (guitar/keyboards; produced Moloko, Zoe and Bootsy Collins). Also featuring well-known vocalists such as: Big Youth, Ranking Roger from The Beat (who recently shared the stage with The Police in Manchester), Earl 16, Benjamin Zephaniah, Seeed and Jazz'min. DubXanne's album is a unique masterpiece, paying respect to an influential super-group. This is massive roots reggae.

Title: Dubstars Vol. 1: From Dub to Disco & From Disco to Dub
Label: ECHO BEACH (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: EB 069CD
Although there is no doubt that dub originates from the small Caribbean island of Jamaica, there are many different versions about the exact moment of its invention. Echo Beach has put together this compilation in an attempt at tracing the historical line from dub to disco and pop, and back again. This circuitous journey may have started with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry, who was dozing off at the beach, and a coconut fell from a tree, hitting him directly on the head. Perhaps this created an astonishing echo in his skull that distorted the received frequencies to a highly psychedelic effect. Why not start with dubifying Terence Trent D'Arby, a multi-instrumentalist and gifted singer who had some insights in dub science? Or perhaps dub originated with François Kevorkian, who mixed with echo, delay, phasers and filters, all for the benefit of dancefloor bliss. Or perhaps the world really first heard dub with Grace Jones' dub version of "She's Lost Control," based on an original composition by a band whose sonic signature writer Simon Reynolds regarded as the whitest sound possible: Manchester's Joy Division, who, after the tragic death of their singer, later became New Order. Mick Hucknall was present at the legendary Sex Pistols gig in Manchester where we also find the later members of Joy Division, with On-U-Sound's Adrian Sherwood -- who both produced the dub version of Simply Red's "Picture Book In Dub." Hucknall creates a dialogue between voice and harmonics by punching them in and out of the track in turn while majestic horns hover over the ballad-like riddim. But maybe it all started with Will Powers, where his treatment of hi-hats and crash-ash-ash-ash-cymbals are reminiscent of King Tubby's, as they fade away into space echo. Or maybe Talking Heads started it all: "Once In A Lifetime" is based on an edgy Afro beat and melts down to a hellish cocktail of potent sensimilla, tranquilizers and crystal meth. This riddim is a challenge to the daring dubmeister, but here it is, once again, the glorious original. Meanwhile in England, in the steel town of Sheffield, soon to be the birthplace of Warp records, Cabaret Voltaire was founded in 1973. The negative side of rock 'n' roll, which, by the mid-'80s, led them to dub. Even mod Paul Weller made contact with state-of-the-art dub on the B-side of Hung Up. A razor sharp guitar riff, a blessed bass line and the radical use of high-pitched mini-Moog propelled "Kosmos" to many DJs' favorite "last track" -- the dub to end all other tunes. Boozoo Bajou reaches backwards through time and hands a digital umbrella to Tony Joe White's soulful "Rainy Night In Georgia," and even Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gets a dubbed remix from Bristol's Massive Attack. Other dub-defiers in this collection include Manu Chao, Dennis Bovell, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Stereo MCs, Brian Eno & David Byrne, and Jam. The archive is growing, version after version, with revamps, bootlegs, remixes, mash-ups, re-edits and copyright-defying white labels from dubstep to Baltimore -- the ensuing chapters of dub are already being written.
