Delayed until March/2025... "A massive photographic archive of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's legendary recording studio. A 600-page tribute to one of the most famous locales in music history, Black Ark is a detailed inventory of photographs and writings from the Black Ark Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, where producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry created music from 1973 onward. The eclectic and constantly evolving decoration of the studio provides an enduring visual counterpart to Perry's expansive musical catalog. From mural paintings to shape-shifting assemblages of records, instruments, found objects, posters and newspaper clippings, the artworks layer upon one another as they intertwine with the studio building itself. Perry created his own dense and diverse world in which to work: memorialized in this volume before the Black Ark disappears for good. The photographic documentation of the studio in the spring of 2021 was supplemented by efforts to secure and preserve Perry's works, objects and recordings as part of a joint project with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Black Ark reflects the rhythm and layering effects of collage both in its content and the materials used to craft the book. Perry was involved in the development of this publication until his death in August 2021. The book closes with memorial essays from Ishion Hutchinson, David Katz, Kodwo Eshun, and John Corbett. Lee 'Scratch' Perry (1936-2021) was a musician and producer best known for pioneering the dub genre in the 1970s. He worked with well-known Jamaican artists such as Bob Marley and the Wailers, the Heptones, the Congos, and Max Romeo. In 2003 he won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album."

Delayed further... until early 2025.."Pioneering media artist and concrete poet Ferdinand Kriwet's 1971 cult artist's book in a facsimile edition. A monumental, three-volume encyclopedia of alphabetically organized images, Ferdinand Kriwet: Stars was first published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch in 1971. In the 1960s, German author and media artist Ferdinand Kriwet (1942-2018), inspired by concrete poetry and its interest in the visual quality of linguistic signs, began to approach the literary medium of the book in a new way. Imagining new ways of reading that resisted linearity, Kriwet experimented with alternatives, encouraging a rapid back-and-forth between the pages of the book and the texts and images on them. In Stars, he treats images like words and arranges them in alphabetical order in an epic encyclopedia format. For years, Stars has only been available, at considerable cost, in antiquarian book catalogs. This new facsimile edition of Ferdinand Kriwet: Stars brings Kriwet's pioneering vision and his seminal book back into print." 416 pages. 2.5 pounds. 5.50(w) x 8.75(h).

When dub and dope beats entered into an open relationship in the mid-nineties and created a casual hybrid with trip hop, Jean-Yves Prieur aka Kid Loco was one of the first French people to be there. With singles like "She's My Lover" and "Love Me Sweet" and the album A Grand Love Story, the producer proved himself to be a loverman indeed, with a knack for bedroom moods, charming little melodies and a comforting balance between minimalism and lush arrangements. As a keyboard all-rounder, Guillaume Méténier aka Soul Sugar has been featured on numerous Kid Loco productions for more than twenty years. From the synthesizer to the clavinet, from the Fender Rhodes to the Leslie organ, the "Funky Frenchman" is no stranger to any keyboard instrument. The Hamburg label Echo Beach, which has already issued dub commissions for a number of pop and new wave classics, thought it was time to change that.

"When Paul Simon first heard the Zulu accordion flourish that would open his multi-platinum album Graceland, he told Joe Boyd that it seemed to proclaim, 'You haven't heard this before!' Yet the 'world music' boom of the 1980s that Simon's album helped to usher in had roots that extended back through the decades and across continents: tango on the eve of World War I, Latin dance across the '30s, '40s and '50s, reggae in the '70s, pre-War samba and pre-Beatles bossa nova, Eastern European ensembles filling capitalist concert halls during the Cold War, Indian ragas changing rock and roll in the 1960s, gypsy music inspiring classical composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. As far back as 1853, the music that had intrigued Simon had captivated London during a Zulu choir's extended run there. (Only Charles Dickens dissented.) Like that of other far-flung musical traditions sweeping the globe, the story of Zulu music and its relationship to neighbors, invaders, appropriators, and admirers -- from brutal 19th century massacres to 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' -- is more controversial, colorful, and complex than many imagine. Joe Boyd was part of a small group of label heads and journalists who chose 'world music' as their marketing slogan in the 1980s. Already the legendary producer of artists including Pink Floyd, The Incredible String Band, Soft Machine, Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Toots and the Maytals, and many others, Boyd had little idea how fast and how wide those simple words would spread, or how far back the history went. He would soon learn, producing pathbreaking music in Cuba, Brazil, Bulgaria, Mali, Hungary, Spain, and India under his label Hannibal Records. Following the success of his book White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s, a self-published smash hit, Boyd now sets out to explore the stories behind the world music he had helped to popularize. He has traveled across continents and interviewed dozens of musicians, producers, and academics, and spent years reading, listening, and writing. The one-of-a-kind result is And The Roots of Rhythm Remain: a riveting, symphonic, globetrotting tour of the music that shapes the world. Hardcover. 900 pages."

"There's an insurmountable weight to Big Mess' music, and at times, an insurmountable wait too. The Lowell, MA based trio have earned themselves a cult like status among those in the know. To come across the heavy thud and dissonant groove of their instrumental wreckage is to fall in love with the band, but it's been seven long years since their last release (a split with New Hampshire's Black Norse) and nearly a decade since their last full length. You'd be excused if you'd thought they'd hung it up, but thankfully, you'd be dead wrong. Big Mess comes roaring back to life on Heroic Captains of Industry. The album is colossally heavy with nuanced writing that see-saws and tugs in opposing directions at will. There's a wealth of atmosphere in Big Mess' songs as chord structures push and pull, rattling in the still air, the band using repetition and space to create their void. Once you've been pulled in, there's nothing left to do but marvel in its wake. 'Caoutchouteuse,' the record's first single is a shimmering example of their spatial focus, a song that moves at a slow-pulled pace, opting for seasick progressions and the juxtaposition of sludge and open-air freedom. As the dust begins to settle, the avalanche comes toppling over. Rather than a post-rock informed crescendo though, Big Mess pull back and peel at the seams, the course a spiral rather than a straight path. It's one brilliantly unpredictable moment on an album full of them (wait til you hear its companion in 'Misery Blues'). Big Mess is back." --Dan Goldin (Post-Trash)

RELEASE DATE: 8/9/2024
Accurately described by Thurston Moore as "great for meditating to the cosmos," Terry Riley's classic Descending Moonshine Dervishes is available again in a limited edition repress manufactured by Optimal in Germany. Originally recorded live in Berlin in 1975 and released by Kuckuck in 1982, Beacon Sound reissued the album in 2016 to widespread acclaim. Using just intonation and a modified organ, Riley conjures forth a rich and layered sound that challenges the Western ear, reflecting his associations with Indian classical singer Pandit Pran Nath and La Monte Young, whose Well Tuned Piano was well underway. Descending Moonshine Dervishes is a virtuosic and kaleidoscopic performance, standing as one of the finest works of a revolutionary composer and musician at the height of his powers. Recorded in concert November 29, 1975 at Metamusik Festival in Berlin. Originally mastered by Stephen Hill. Remastered in 2016 by Rafael Anton Irisarri. Front cover painting by Helmut Zimmermann. Back cover photography by Roberto Masotti.
"Descending Moonshine Dervishes' dates from 1975 and it belongs to a larger Dervish series of compositions whose origins predate Riley's two signature works of minimalism, 'In C' (1968) and 'A Rainbow In Curved Air' (1969)? (the piece is) structured around just intonation, which stretches the listening experience into new areas. Played on a Yamaha organ with a bit of tape delay that allows Riley to duet with himself, the music of Descending Moonshine Dervishes is an ear expansion that goes through skittering arpeggios and long, droning notes that indicate something of the many levels that it operates on." --Louise Gray, The Wire Magazine (2017)
"Terry Riley has become a totemic presence in music over the past half-century." --The Guardian

Weather Report's long and illustrious career had many twists, turns and revelations. Live In London draws on the best moments of performances delivered at the Hammersmith Odeon in June 1983, with former Chic percussionist Jose Rossy, plus a take of "Corner Pocket" as played at the Dominion Theatre one year later with Mino Cinelu. Mainstay Joe Zawinul mans the ship alongside saxophonist Wayne Shorter, this edition of WR driven by the frantic beats of Omar Hakim and the bass of Victor Bailey, less showy than Jaco yet just as engaging. Initially cut for radio broadcast, fans of late-era Weather Report will love every moment.

Reissue, originally released in 1967. Family vocal group the Esquires was formed in Milwaukee in the late 1950s; by the time they moved to Chicago to launch their recording career the group featured Gilbert Moorer, Alvis Moorer, and Sam Pace and although Curtis Mayfield turned them down, Bunky Sheppard recognized their potential, their debut single "Get On Up" a smash hit that led to the recording of this brilliant debut album, an excellent collection of upbeat melodic soul with the group's vocal harmonies in the spotlight. Further permutations would follow but Get On Up And Get Away captures the group in its illustrious beginning, full of shining joy. A top-notch release!

A veritable institution of British folk, Fairport Convention has been going strong since the mid-1960s. Double album Live At Rock City is chock full of winners: along with strong adaptations of "John Barleycorn" and "Reynard The Fox" there are top tracks from "Expletive Delighted," including "Three Left Feet," "Sigh Beg Sigh Mor", "Portmeirion" and "Sack The Juggler". There's beautiful symmetry between Dave Pegg's mandolin and Martin Allcock's bouzouki; Ric Sanders raises the roof on electric violin, Dave Mattacks' drums are quietly steady and Simon Nicol's guitar and voice completes the picture. A must for all Fairport fans!

Reissue, originally released in 1969. Obscure psychedelic gospel act Methuselah had its roots in Scunthorpe "Beat" group the Dimples, which became Gospel Garden, whose only 45 infused Northern Soul with psyche leanings. Regrouping as Methuselah, the group signed to Elektra for this sole religious rock concept LP, their sound deceptively American, with vocal harmonies evidencing bluegrass influences; guitarist Les Nicol is never short of excellent. Certain members would later form Amazing Blondel, but Matthew, Mark, Luke And John has a unique flavor, and this edition includes two three bonus tracks. This slice of obscure psyche must be heard to be believed!

The long running vessel for Cameron Stallones' psychedelic excursions, Sun Araw, returns to Discrepant after 2023's split with Tarzana via Keroxen sister label. Without much precedent in his own -- already wide-ranging -- back-catalog, Cetacean Sensation discards the dubby vibes, psych-rock sunburnt jams, tropical visions, or stalking sensibilities of such classic efforts as On Patrol or Ancient Romans towards a deeply focused and vivid solitary approach, while still retaining this Sun Araw blissed out escapist feeling. Composed of hydrophone recordings of whales and dolphins sourced during a summer in Galicia, Cetacean Sensation paints an impressionistic and sensory floating canvas that expertly escapes both academic-like documentarian purposes and any new-age spa vibrations one could associate with such subject matter. Processing those raw recordings into alluring collages that flow gracefully between moments of clear eco-location and submerged impressions of wildlife social dynamics. By the third track -- "Dance of the Minke"-- listeners are introduced to this ringing MIDI tone that evokes a CD-ROM era of mystic educational programs and click-and-deploy strategies that still feel very much like an unfulfilled future, conjured again by "Spider Crab Elegy's" sparse keyboard pads and sound effects that give way to this properly elegiac tentative melody. "The Spider Crab Point" ends the album on a more uneasy vibe, with synth tones pointing towards no particular direction, confounding and strangely inviting at the same time. As sensations often do. Music written and produced by Cameron Stallones using hydrophones and digital synthesis. Recorded in 2019 in Galicia, ES Mastering by Rashad Becker.

This is the second incredible album which the Brazilian bossa combo Tamba 4 did in the US for A&M Records, during the brief time when they were expanded to a quartet from the original Tamba Trio lineup. This album can be considered a masterpiece that combines their original style with American sophistication. The set is completely sublime. A wonderful mix of the group's trademark harmony vocals and crackling bossa rhythms, with the warmly flowing CTI production style of the time -- not funky like the CTI sound of the '70s, but a bit more sophisticated than the style Creed Taylor had been using earlier at Verve. Tracks are short, breezy, and often very lively -- bossa grooving warmed in the California sun.

The Cyrkle's second LP published in 1967, Neon, was an album with some of the most soaring three-part harmonies and intricate arrangements that '60s pop music had to offer. This album provides much to enjoy to fans of typically '60s harmonies, artful production, and crafty integration of acoustic and electric dynamics with a wide range of instruments. About the best of the lot are "Our Love Affair's in Question," which sounds quite a bit like 1966 Simon & Garfunkel, and "Don't Cry, No Fears, No Tears Comin' Your Way," which is tougher than most of their output.

John Surman's Jazz in Britain '68-'69 is an overview disc of his '60s band and one of the more enjoyable vintage British jazz records. These tunes come from several different sessions recorded in the late sixties, as evidenced by the alternate drummers -- Alan Jackson and Tony Oxley -- and the use of different instrumentation, like the three-horn modal piece "Bouquet Garni," from 1968 that places Surman in the company of only two other horn players -- Alan Skidmore and Mike Osborne -- and no rhythm section, in the configuration that would emerge in the mid-'70s as S.O.S. For most of the other tracks, Oxley is the drummer, Kenny Wheeler plays flugelhorn, and John Taylor plays piano (acoustic and electric). The music here is all over the place stylistically, but it hardly matters because all the players are fully engaged, and as an ensemble, they all shine and were seemingly looking forward to the impact the new jazz would have.

Thru The Years is a compilation album of music by John Mayall released in October 1971 by Decca Records in the U.K. and London Records in the U.S.A. The album was the second compilation to be issued by Decca/London with Mayall's blessing and it features a mixture of previously unissued songs or non-album tracks that had only been released as singles. A grab bag of rare tracks from the '60s, some of which stand among Mayall's finest. His debut 1964 single "Crawling Up a Hill" is one of his best originals. The eight songs featuring Peter Green include some top-notch material that outpaces much of the only album recorded by the Green lineup (A Hard Road), particularly the Green originals "Missing You" and "Out of Reach," a great B-side with devastating, icy guitar lines and downbeat lyrics that ranks as one of the great lost blues-rock cuts of the '60s. The set is filled out with a few songs from the Mick Taylor era, the highlight being the vicious instrumental "Knockers Step Forward."

The Bronx in the 1970s, marked by the presence of notorious gangs, presented a complex and challenging urban landscape reflected in abandoned buildings and neglected public spaces. The prevalence of street gangs, such as the Ghetto Brothers, contributed to an atmosphere of heightened tension and occasional violence. The Ghetto Brothers, originating from the Melendez family who moved from Puerto Rico to the South Bronx in the 1950s, faced challenges involving violence and crime. Despite this, Benjy Melendez, a key figure, directed the group towards community improvement. The Ghetto Brothers embraced music, crafting a potent, NYC-flavored musical fusion that caught the attention of record mogul Ismael Maisonave (Salsa Records). Their collaboration resulted in the recording of eight tracks in a single electrifying day at Manhattan's Fine Tone Studios, skillfully produced by Latin studio maestro Bobby Marin (Harvey Averne, La Lupe, Brooklyn Sounds), one of the best Latin funk albums ever recorded. This musical odyssey showcases the band's ability to seamlessly blend genres, creating a NYC-flavored stew that captivates listeners with its authenticity. The two tracks on this single, stand out songs from the LP, are a perfect representation of the Ghetto Brothers sound. "Got This Happy Feeling" is an upbeat number with heavy Latin funk grooves, while "Girl From the Mountain" is a highly addictive mid-tempo soulful ballad. These tracks are a vibrant tapestry, weaving together the raw energy of the South Bronx streets and the soulful melodies born from the band's Puerto Rican heritage.

After two successful albums on MAG, supported by a handful of singles, the Peruvian garage beat band Los York's culminated their disagreements with their label by leaving it in 1969 and signing a new contract with Virrey. Along the way there was an album to finish for which they had already recorded a good part of the instrumental tracks. Los York's 69 finally saw the light of day on MAG but, to the surprise of its fans, the voice of its charismatic singer, Pablo Luna, had been replaced by that of the no less iconic Pablo Branda, also known as Melcochita. The all-round artist, trained in the studios of MAG as a skilled percussionist, guitarist and sonero, proved himself to also sing and shout with the same energy and attitude as the brilliant Pablo Luna. On top of that, it is rumored that it was another MAG artists, Los Teddy's, who actually completed the instrumental tracks for some cuts on the album, something that seems consistent with the much more energetic and surfy style of songs like "El Sicodélico." Two of the best and wildest songs contained on their last LP had never appeared on a single despite their enormous potential for the dance floor and the interest they aroused among DJs since their rediscovery in the '60s scene. Set the dance floor on fire with the first time 45 issue of this Latin garage double-sider.

The self-titled Orquesta Olivieri appeared in 1972, just when the Fania Records revolution, powerfully controlling the salsa business, was reaching its peak. It disappeared for good, sadly representing the last production by this band. This 1972 album reflects the years when salsa was exploding In New York City, and, for that matter, Latin America altogether. Produced by Bobby Marin, an experienced go-to man in Latin Music, especially Afro-Caribbean sounds, was released by Pavilion Records, a NYC restaurant related label. This was actually the only album ever released by this, very short-lived label. Side A opens with the slow-paced Latin soul song "There is No Other Girl," that style-wise connects to their previous LP, released when the boogaloo trend was still around. In fact, this song had been previously released two years earlier on a 45 and was then overdubbed (adding an organ on top) for this LP version. The song is very much in demand these days in the lowrider soul scene due to the breath-taking vocal harmonies and appealing production. The album also comprises spicy guaguancós on "Cuando llegué a Borinquen," the classic "Los Muchachos de Belén" and "Tabaritiando." There is also room for a cha-cha-chá, "María Isabel," and a guaracha "Perrito sabueso," and the album closes with the Latin soul ballad "Preferí perderte," interpreted in Spanish. Originally released in 1980, this was Stiv Bators' first solo album. Now reissued with two bonus tracks, not available on the original version, a slightly different picture on the cover (the actual unfiltered photo as used on the 1980 issue) and a booklet with extensive liner notes and photos. Bators was the man who destroyed Rocket from the Tombs, from which he hijacked half the members to found one of the most influential American punk bands to have existed, The Dead Boys. Stiv had turned in his broken teeth for a more power pop oriented solo career. This is not an album recorded by a has-been former punk idealist; instead it's a true step forward into another unknown arena packing all the glare and attitude that remained from the last. The music is more similar to '60s power pop than the vicious punk rock that Bators became known for originally, while a member of The Dead Boys. New generations continue to discover it. It still holds up very well and sounds as fresh and vibrant as ever.

Between 1967 and 1974 Saúl and Manuel Cornejo led a series of epoch-making groups on the MAG label (New Juggler Sound, Laghonia, and We All Together) in the history of Peruvian rock. All these bands were directly influenced by the British invasion and used new sounds from Hammond, phase shifters, synthesizers and tapes played backwards, which stimulated rivalry with other groups. Another hallmark of the brothers was the technical quality of their records, thanks to Saul's supervision of all MAG recordings between 1972 and 1974. At the end of 1971, when Laghonia was working on the last tracks of Etcétera, they met Manuel Antonio Guerrero's (MAG) son, Carlos, who had just got back from the USA, and gladly joined in the choruses of the last songs Laghonia was recording. They met up again soon after to rehearse some of Paul McCartney's songs. As soon as he heard them play, Guerrero Senior urged them to form a group focused on cover versions of foreign hits not yet known in Peru. Initially, the Cornejo brothers weren't enthused by a project so different from Laghonia, but ended up accepting as it gave them the opportunity to spend time in the studio. Carlos' melodic voice was another incentive, although they made it clear that the new group, We All Together (WAT), would stick to the mixing desk: "The group isn't into presentations or shows, we're about recording music and purifying it to the max," stated Saúl at that time. Their first album included four covers of Paul McCartney and Badfinger, several compositions by Carlos Guerrero -- appealing Beatles-style melodies -- and two songs from Saúl and Manuel's archives. "Children," by keyboardist Carlos Salom, opens the LP: a nostalgic description of childhood, with the distinctive piano sound (achieved through mixing) that permeates the record. Although WAT sang and composed in English, they had no intention of undermining or alienating national culture. Their aim was much more innocent: they simply wanted to make it in the English-speaking world. "It's a Sin to Go Away" was composed during Laghonía's lifetime as a band and it features guitars played backwards and a psychedelic-progressive style closely attuned to the era. After being included on several compilations, praise for the song has flowed from Europe and the United States in recent years. The album was released in July 1972 and became one of the best-selling Peruvian rock LPs.
